Football FAQs
Quick answers to the questions fans ask most, from the offside rule and VAR to formations, positions and India’s top clubs.
Each team has 11 players on the pitch, including one goalkeeper. Most professional matches allow five substitutes, and a team cannot play with fewer than seven players.
When a teammate passes, a player is offside if they're in the opponent's half and nearer the goal than the ball and second-last defender, then join play.
A match has two 45-minute halves plus stoppage time for delays. Some knockout games add 30 minutes of extra time, followed by a penalty shootout if still level.
A yellow card is a warning for fouls or unsporting behaviour. Two yellows, or one serious offence, mean a red card: the player is sent off and cannot be replaced.
VAR stands for Video Assistant Referee. Officials watching replays help the referee fix clear mistakes on goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity. The on-field official has the final say.
There are four main positions: goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards. These split into specific roles, such as centre-back, full-back, winger and striker, depending on the team's tactics.
The numbers show how outfield players line up from back to front. A 4-4-2 means four defenders, four midfielders and two strikers. The goalkeeper isn't counted.
A hat-trick is when one player scores three goals in a single match. Two goals by one player is called a brace.
Ball games were played in ancient China, Greece and elsewhere, but modern football began in England in 1863, when the Football Association agreed a common set of rules.
Kolkata rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are two of India's oldest and most popular clubs. Kerala Blasters, Bengaluru FC, FC Goa and Mumbai City are leading ISL sides./p>
